Generally speaking Access Control is the selective restriction of access to a place or resource. Access control can be used in reference to the fields of physical security and information security. For example Access Control in the field of physical security can be utilized in automobiles to restrict access to the vehicle to only the authorized personnel. In the field of information security access control can be utilized to restrict access to certain information on a computer or network server.

Access Control regarding physical security is not just for cars either. Access Control is utilized in homes, offices, and other entrances to properties. In this area of Access Control security is typically achieved by lock and key, with only authorized personnel having access to the lock and key.

In order to achieve optimum home or automobile security access control is necessary to prevent any unwanted access to property. Despite being the best way to ensure security, users of access control must beware of by what is referred to as 'tailgating'; in which an intruder will simply follow behind a legitimate access control user to gain access to a restricted property. Therefore it is important to not only install a secure means of access control but to also make a conscious effort when using access control to prevent unauthorized access.
