Here at C&S Lock & Security we are all about protecting our customers, and their property that is why we have created this article with detailed instructions about how to properly do a Deadbolt Installation. Follow these simple easy steps to make sure that you correctly install your deadbolt on your property. A Deadbolt is the cheapest and safest defenses from unwanted intruders you can install, but only if you install it correctly.
Use the Provided Template – It’s always a good idea before you drill into your doorframe that you use the template provided to create guidelines. The deadbolt should be at least above 6” above your doorknob for the best security.
Cut a Deadbolt Hole – Using your reference points that you made from the template cut a hole for your deadbolt. Once the pilot bit on the hole saw comes through the other side stop and finish it from the other side.
Drill a Hole Through Edge – Now you want to use a 7/8” spade bit to drill a hole through the edge of the door for the bolt.
Cut Area for Faceplate – you will need to use a wood chisel to mortise the area around the faceplate so that it can lay flush with the door. Having the faceplate flush with the door is essential to security so make sure you do this step correctly.
Secure Bolt to Door – Now you will need to continue to mortise until the faceplate fits correctly then drill pilot holes and tighten the bolt to the door with screws.
Install Cylinder and Thumb Lever- Make sure that you dry fit all of these pieces before you secure them all together to make sure they fit right. It’s always a good idea to fit the exterior side onto the door first then try and set the interior piece in place.
Drill Holes and Secure Strike Plate – Mark the end of your bolt with lipstick or a marker and close the door. Now open the lock a few times so that the lock strikes the door leaving a reference mark. Once you have a mark make sure that you use a 7/8” spade bit to drill two overlapping holes in the doorframe for the deadbolt. After make sure that you mortise the area around the hole so that the strike plate is flush with the doorframe.
